Die 20. Edition des legendären chinesischen OPEN International Performance Art Festivals wird am Montag, den 19. August 2019 im Kulturzentrum Pavillon eröffnet. Zum ersten mal findet dieses Festival außerhalb Chinas, in Deutschland und der Schweiz statt. 

 

2000 gründeten die Kuratoren Chen Jin, Shu Yang und Zhu Ming das Open International Performance Art Festival mit dem Ziel exzellente internationale Performancekünstler*innen vorzustellen und mit dem chinesischen Publikum in einen Austausch zu treten. Bisher wurde das Festival 19 Mal abgehalten und bot jährlich eine "freie Plattform für internationale Performancekunst". Viele der bisherigen Teilnehmer*innen beteiligen sich im Geiste der Unabhängigkeit, Offenheit und Ausdrucksfreiheit. Das Festival hatte und hat große kulturelle Bedeutung und wurde zu einer wichtigen Plattform unter den international arbeitenden Performancekünstler*innen.

Historisch betrachtet beschleunigte sich das Tempo der sozioökonomischen Reformen Chinas zu Beginn der neunziger Jahre. Der Informationsaustausch zwischen China und den USA sowie zwischen China und Europa war offener, und dies führte zu einem verstärkten Einfluss ausländischer Performancekünstler*innen auf chinesische Künstler*innen. Eine Vielzahl neuer Ausdrucksmittel stimulierte das kreative Denken chinesischer Künstler*innen, insbesondere der damals neuen Generation. In der Zwischenzeit veränderte sich auch die chinesische Gesellschaft, aber die neuen Ideen und Gedanken erreichten nur eine kleine, begrenzte Gruppe von Menschen.

In den letzen Jahren kam es immer wieder zu Zwischenfällen und inzwischen wird die Performancekunst in China als provokative Kunstform bezeichnet. Dieses hat Auswirkungen auf unabhängige Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und freie Ausstellungs- und Aufführungsformate. 2019 werden wir nun die Offenheit der Besucher*innen Hannovers und noch weiterer Stationen gemeinsam mit den Koperationspartner*innen in Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Burgbrohl, Basel und Bochum auf die Probe stellen und diskutieren. Ganz im Geiste der Unabhängigkeit, Offenheit und Ausdrucksfreiheit.

The 20th edition of the legendary Chinese OPEN International Performance Art Festival will open on Monday, the 19th of August 2019 at the Kulturzentrum Pavillon in Hannover. For the first time this festival takes place outside of China, in Germany and Switzerland.

In 2000, curators Chen Jin, Shu Yang, and Zhu Ming founded the Open International Performance Art Festival, which aims to introduce excellent international performance artists and engage with Chinese audiences. So far, the festival has been held 19 times and offered annually a "free platform for international performance art". Many of the current participants participate in the spirit of independence, openness and freedom of expression. The festival had and still has great cultural significance and became an important platform among internationally working performance artists.
 

Historically, the pace of China's socio-economic reforms accelerated at the beginning of the 1990s. The exchange of information between China and the US and between China and Europe was more open, and this led to a greater influence of foreign performance artists on Chinese artists. A variety of new means of expression stimulated the creative thinking of Chinese artists, especially the then new generation. In the meantime, Chinese society also changed, but the new ideas and thoughts reached only a small, limited group of people.

In recent years, incidents have been recurrent and now the performance art in China is referred to as a provocative art form. This has implications for independent artists, curators and independent exhibition and performance formats. In 2019 we will now test and discuss the openness of the visitors of Hanover and other stations together with the cooperation partners in Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Burgbrohl, Basel and Bochum. In the spirit of independence, openness and freedom of expression.
